The results of the contest "Best Wine of the Year" were announced to the exhibitors and industry professionals during the second day of the international exhibition "Drinks Industry / Russian Wine Fair 2012" in Moscow restaurant Monument.
Wines submitted for the competition were judged by a professional jury, headed by Patrick Léon, outstanding Bordeaux winemaker. Co-chair of the jury was Leonid Popovich, President of the Union of Winegrowers and Winemakers of Russia. The jury consisted of: RodSmith, MW, head of the supplier of elite products and wine for yacht clubs and owners of wineries throughout the Mediterranean; Marco Sabellico, editor and leading expert of Gambero Rosso, a wine guide on the best wines of Italy; Igor Serdyuk, wine expert, columnist of the gazettes Vedomosti and Komersant, a regular author of Maininger, Drinks Business and other prominent publications; Arthur Sarkissian, president of Union of sommeliers and experts of Russia, owner of a chain of restaurants and wine boutiques Le Sommelier; Dmitry Fedotov, director of the Independent wine Club, a wine critic and author of several publications in journals ArtinWine, Forbes, RobbReport and others.
Only still wines were submitted to the contest, and all of them – winners of the awards of all denominations (gold, silver and bronze medals) at this year’s tasting competitions in Europe (International Wine Challenge, International Wine & Spirit Competition, Mundus Vini, Concours Mondialde Bruxelles) and the gold medalists of the most prestigious national competition "South Russia 2012". In total 20 samples were submitted to the tasting, including wines of Krasnodar wineries "Aurora", "Kuban-vino", "Lefkadia" branch of "Ochakovo" - "Southern Wine Company", and wines from Rostov producers "Millerovskiy vinzavod" and "Tsimlyanskye vina". The total high level of presented wines was confirmed by the high marks given by the jury members.
The winner in the category "Best Red Wine of the Year" became the wine of geographical name Vedernikovskoe aged in oak dry red "Krasnostop Zolotovskii 2010" ("Millerovskiy vinzavod", Rostov region), in the category "Best White Wine of the Year" - wine of geographical name of foothills of the North-West Caucasus dry white "Chardonnay 2010" (company "Lefkadia", Krasnodar region). The winners were awarded with the most prestigious award in the Russian alcohol market - National Gold Award for the quality of alcohol products, which were presented at the awards ceremony by the founder of the "Russian Alcohol Oscar" Pavel Shapkin.
At the end of the ceremony the diplomas "Best Winemaker of the Year" were handed to Wanda Botnar, Chief Technologist of "Kuban-Vino" and Gulbala Zeid - Chief Winemaker of "Vinodelnya Vedernikov" of "Millerovskiy vinzavod". Best winemakers also received a present from the Asti Group Exhibition Company, which will give them the opportunity to visit the VinExpo 2013 exhibition in Bordeaux.
